She has worked exclusively with children with feeding and swallowing disorders at Carolina Pediatric Dysphagia for almost 3 years. She is a member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association special interest divisions (13) Swallowing/swallowing disorders and (14) Communication disorders and sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations. These special interest divisions provide networking and information regarding the latest in research and clinical issues.

Joan has over 21 years of experience working with infants and children with feeding/swallowing disorders/ dysphagia. She worked 10 years in the hospital setting (WakeMed and Vanderbilt Medical Center) providing feeding evaluations and treatment in the NICU, PICU, special care follow up clinics and on the pediatric floor. After starting or re-organizing feeding Clinics in the hospital, she started Carolina Pediatric Dysphagia in 1996. She continues to provide consultation to professionals world wide through her website www.feeding.com, as well as through conferences and group consultation and a publication in a professional journal.
Joan continues to evaluate in the clinic and through Modified Barium Swallow Studies (in the x-ray department of a hospital) and treat infants and children. She graduated from Lesley College in Cambridge Massachusetts with a degree in early childhood education. Nancy worked for many years as both a preschool and kindergarten teacher in the Raleigh area. (Millbrook Methodist Preschool, North Ridge Elementary School and Ravenscroft School).
Nancy returned to graduate school at North Carolina Central University and received a Masters Degree in Communication Disorders. She has experience evaluating and treating both children and adults but her passion is working with pediatric populations. She has worked in a variety of settings including public schools, skilled nursing, and the hospital.
Nancy has completed training in pediatric feeding disorders assessment/intervention, as well as, esophageal dysphasia and it?s impact on feeding and swallowing function. She has experience in working with augmentative communication devices, early intervention, language delays/disorders, articulation and phonological processing disorders, Apraxia and Autism. | Dr. Pierce has been a Speech-Language Pathologist working primarily with children with severe speech and physical impairments for the past 18 years. She taught several courses for the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at UNC-CH from 1985-1994. She also was the Education Director at the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at UNC-CH from 1990-1994. Dr. Pierce was the State Assistive Techology Consultant and Director of Professional Services for the N.C. Dept of Health and Human Services from 1994-1998. | Preemies & Associates (PAA) is an early intervention agency specializing in supporting the unique needs of infants and toddlers born prematurely, small for gestational age, medically fragile or with genetic conditions such as Down Syndrome. PAA's CBRS staff are experts in addressing self-regulation, feeding and sleep concerns; as well as strategies for supporting language, motor, cognitive and social development of all infants and toddlers. Individual staff members bring additional expertise in areas such as global developmental delays, sensory-processing disorders and behavioral concerns secondary to language delays. Supporting families as a partner and as a resource is the cornerstone of PAA's services. Staff participates in on-going continuing education, journal clubs and monthly in-service training provided by PAA's Clinical Director, Ann Marie Elmore. Ann Marie is a neonatal physical therapist with over 25 years experience working with premature and other high risk infants in the NICU and home. Stacey received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Temple University in 1988 and returned to Temple to obtain her Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology in 1997. Prior to joining Pediatric Therapy Associates in September 2006, Stacey worked for agencies in the Philadelphia, PA and southern New Jersey areas that specialize in services for birth-to-3 and preschool populations, including The Easter Seal Society of Southeastern PA and The Center for Autistic Children. Stacey has also served as Clinical Coordinator of Early Intervention Opportunities in Philadelphia, where she chaired citywide tasks forces for early literacy and speech-language standards of practice. Her experience includes working with children with a range of disabilities, from moderate to profound. Stacey's areas of extensive work include children with language disorders, speech disorders, hearing loss and oral-motor dysfunction.

She then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to earn her Master of Science in Speech Pathology in 1993. Stuart has worked in a variety of settings including schools, preschools, clinic based, and home environments. She has experience evaluating and treating children with a wide range of diagnoses including developmental delay, post traumatic syndrome, shaken baby syndrome, apraxia, Down syndrome, hearing impairment, failure to thrive, traumatic brain injury, phonological disorders, language delays, articulation disorders, and autism. In addition, literacy is an area in which Stuart has particular interest and expertise.
