| | | | | Early Pharmacologic Intervention in Autism: A Randomized, Placebo-controlled Trial of Fluoxetine in Preschool Children. | Do you know a child who has recently been diagnosed with autism? Does your child have difficulty with changes in routine, interacting with others or intense interest in unusual things?
The ASPIRE Research program at the UNC-Chapel Hill's Department of Psychiatry is recruiting children ages thirty to fifty-eight months (2.5-5 years) for an autism treatment study. The study is a 12 month study designed to assess whether or not overall functioning can be improved with fluoxetine (Prozac) treatment.
Benefits for subjects include a comprehensive diagnostic assessment at the beginning of the study. If the child meets criteria for autism and has no medical contraindications to treatment in the study, they will have a comprehensive cognitive and language assessment at baseline and then again at three months, seven months, and twelve months of study participation. Appointments with child psychiatrists who specialize in autism spectrum disorders are provided free of charge to research participants.
Enrollment for this particular study closes at the end of January 2007. We are actively seeking participants for this important study until then.
If you think this study may be appropriate for your child, please contact us. We are happy to tell you more about our program and answer any questions. Please call the ASPIRE Research Hotline (1-800-708-0048) or email us at Lsikich@med.unc.edu.
