ethan picWhat a GREAT Success!!!

Wow!  That's about all I can say...WOW!  What an amazing and fun day the over 400 participants, 50+ volunteers, and 35 Resource Fair Vendors had at the First Annual Run, Walk & Roll held at Crowder District Park in Apex on May 30th! Due to everyone's amazing efforts the event brought in over $20,000 to support TelAbility, WATCH and Pediatric Rehabilitation at UNC.

The weather was perfect and the emotions were high!  We will try to do our best to acknowledge and recognize everyone who made the event possible, but chances are we will miss someone.  If you were an event sponsor or donor, volunteered in any aspect of the event, participated in the 5k run or  one mile walk, donated money to the team of your choice, cheered on the participants, had a Resource Fair table or just wished us well, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Although I spent a good part of the day running around like a crazy person, I had a blast calling out the runners names as they crossed the 5k finish line.  I got tears in my eyes and celebrated their success as I saw children awarded their medals at the end of the one mile walk.  I was also so impressed by the variety of Resource Fair vendors and the wealth of knowledge they shared, along with they many creative children's activities.

The picture at the top of the newsletter really sums up the spirit of the day and gives me the fuel and desire to make next year's event even bigger and better.  We learned it's never too early to start planning, so if you have any interest in helping with next year's event or have ideas to share, please contact me at jsimpvos@med.unc.edu.

I hope you enjoy reading more about this fantastic day and the people who made it possible.  Have a fabulous summer!

Overcoming the Odds

Nathan Baker, pictured here crossing the RW&R 5k finish line, and John Allen Atkins, were both featured in the local media  recently.

Both young men are patients of Dr. Alexander and participated in the Run, Walk & Roll.  Just click the links below for your daily does of inspiration:

Nathan's finishing time for the 5k was 24 minutes and 23 seconds!  John Allen brought a huge crowd with him to participate in the one mile walk.  Congratulations to them both and a huge thanks to all their family and friends who supported the event.
And the Winners are...nathan finish

Everyone who participated in the Run, Walk & Roll of course!

In all seriousness, due to some timing errors and confusion about the 5k course, we have decided not to post the 5k race times.  However, we would like to congratulate our 1st-3rd place Men's and Women's finishers:

-Matt Wilkie (Men's 1st place:  17 mn, 56 secs)
-Richard Ferguson (Men's 2nd place:  18 mn, 51 secs)
-Matt Craigle (Men's 3rd place:  19 mn, 43 secs)

-Julie (and Isabelle)Thurman (Women's 1st place:  21 mn, 38 secs)
-Virgina Wallace (Women's 2nd place:  21 mn, 56 secs)
-Lauren Riedle and Ellen Giordias (tied for 3rd place:  22 mn, 10 secs)

If you ran in the 5k and would like to know the time we have listed for you, feel free to contact Juliellen at jsimpvos@med.unc.edu and I'd be happy to tell you.  We promise to have a more accurate timing system in place for next year.  Thanks for your understanding and patience.
