Working with Caregivers of Infants and Toddlers with Special Needs from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds
Date: 01/01/2001

Author: Rivers K

Source: Infant-Toddler Intervention. Volume 10 Number 2, June 2000

This article reviews the projected demographic changes of culturally and linguistically diverse groups within the United States, the history of legislative mandates for services for children with special needs, and factors that can affect caregivers' willingness to participate in exceptional children's programs. Rivers also provides a list of skills and behaviors necessary for interacting with caregivers in a culturally and linguistically sensitive manner. The list of skills and behaviors provided can easily be used as an individual or program self-assessment or as the basis for group discussion among members of an intervention team.
