Nutrition messages in a sample of children?s picture books
Date: 07/31/2004

Author: Byrne EM and Nitzke SA.

Source: : Journal of the American Dietetic Association 2000. 100(3); 359-361.

114 children?s picture books were looked at to evaluate how messages pertaining to food were viewed and how they may influence preschool children?s attitudes toward food. The books were selected from a national children?s book database to select the most popular books for preschoolers. The books were ?coded? for certain criteria (ex: positive or negative images expressed about food). 74% of the books looked at had at least one mention of food. Foods in the grain group were mentioned the most and foods in the vegetable group were mentioned the least. Positive mentions of food (i.e. foods portrayed as being ?healthy?, ?tasty? etc), were mentioned more often than negative messages.
