Research Project
Date: 03/20/2000

A longitudinal research project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control, is underway to examine the effects of Pediatric Head Injury (PHI) on the lives of children, youth, and young adults, particularly looking at additional or secondary efects of the injury. The project is being conducted by Barbara Keith Walter, Ph.D., from Lenox Baker Children's Hospital at Duke Medical Center, and Rune Simeonsson, Ph.D., from the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The information is being gathered at the PHI follow-up clinic at Lenox Baker Children's Hospital and at the UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill under the medical direction of Gordon Worley, MD of the Duke Medical Center, And Joshua Alexander, MD, from UNC Hospitals. The criteria for participation are: age between infancy and 24 years, a head injury before 18 years of age and not more than 10 years ago. Those who agree to participate will be asked questions in a short interview and through paper and pencil questionnaires. Background information will be gathered from medical records. Children from 6-17 years of age will also be offered a chance to tell their experiences to the research staff and to complete paper and pencil measures. For children under six, parents or guardians will provide most of the information. The study is expected to last for two years, and families would be interviewed once each year of the study. Families who complete the measures will receive $20 each information gathering time.
Participation is completely voluntary, and participation or non-participation will not in any way affect your or your child's services. If you would like to learn more about the project, please call Melissa Mooney at 919-966-9131.
