Play and assistive technology issues for infants and young children with disabilities: A preliminary examination.

This article offers a thorough review of the literature on the development and importance of play for all children. A table outlining play research is included. The authors also present a clear description of assistive technology use within each developmental domain, e.g., communication, self help. A table of assistive technology solutions is included. The article includes descriptions of "high" and "low tech" adaptations for children to be more involved and interactive during play. A case study of a 12 month old child with Periventricular Leukomalaysia is presented along with assistive technology strategies used to help the child be more interactive and independent while playing. The article concludes with a discussion of potential barriers and facilitators to assistive technology use with young children.
