This study, appearing in the 8/10/00 issue, reports on the developmental and medical outcomes of 314 children who were born in the United Kingdom at 25 or fewer completed weeks of gestation and survived to 2.5 years of age. At 30 months of age, each child was assessed through a complete medical history, a physical examination (including neurologic assessment), hearing and eye exams, a growth assessment, developmental testing with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (2nd edition), and a classification of the degree and type of disability. Overall, approximately one half of these children demonstrated some kind of disability (with 23% having a disability that was "likely to put the child in need of physical assistance to perform daily activities"). 49% of these children showed no signs of disability at this stage in their lives.
