This article provides general information on aspiration in infants ands children. Aspiration is defined as the accidental entry of a foreign substance into the respiratory tract (lungs). The author discusses the differences between aspiration from eating which happens as food goes down the wrong way because of swallowing problems and aspiration from gastroesophageal reflux which happens when food comes back up from the stomach and goes into the airway. Signs and symptoms of aspiration and reflux are listed and ways to diagnose and treat aspiration are discussed.
