The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of passive range of motion (PROM) exercises on lower extremity contractures for six adults with spastic quadraplegic cerebral palsy. Four men and two women 22-44 years of age participated in the study over a 16 week period. They were all residents of a state-operated residential facility for people with mental retardation. They all used a wheelchair for mobility and had limited movement of at least three leg joints. The study had two phases. During the first phase, three of the participants received PROM three times a week by physical therapy aides at the facility. The other three participants receive no PROM. During the second phase the groups were reversed and the PROM was discontinued for the first three participants but was provided for the second three participants. The results showed no consistent difference in range of motion in the leg joints with or without the PROM exercise.
