COMMON USES Used to treat anxiety; athetosis (a movement disorder); seizures, and spasticity
HOW IT'S SUPPLIED 1 milligram/milliliter and 5 milligram/milliliter solutions taken by mouth. 2-, 5- and 10 milligram tablets taken by mouth 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20-milligram suppository/rectal delivery system (for intermittent seizure control). Injectable solution (used to quickly stop seizures or decrease anxiety)
HOW IT WORKS Enhances the actions of GABA (a chemical in the brain that helps decrease anxiety, seizures, and spasticity)
THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR *Most common side effects include drowsiness, fatigue and ataxia *Can also help a child fall asleep at night *Some oral solutions contain up to 19% alcohol ! *Should not be used in children with glaucoma *May cause withdrawel symptoms (seizures, tremor, abdominal and muscle cramps, vomiting and sweating) if a patient's high dose is suddenly stopped, but is not usually addictive at lower doses *Intravenous form contains soy protein and should not be given to children with soy allergies.
