Psyllium

BRAND NAMES:
Fiberall?, Konsyl?, Metamucil?, Perdiem?

COMMON USES:
Used as a laxative.
Sometimes used as aid in the treatment of high cholesterol.

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
Psyllium is available as granules, powders, or wafers.

HOW IT WORKS:
Psyllium absorbs liquid in the intestinal tract, causing expansion of the stool. The resultant increase in bulk of the stool helps with gut movement and stool evacuation.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* The granules and powders shold be mixed with a full glass of water (240 milliliters/8 ounces/enough to fill a can of soda).
* The wafers should be taken with plenty of water to prevent choking.
* Do not use if your child has trouble swallowing, esophageal strictures, or history of intestinal obstruction.
* Not to be used in children with phenylketonuria (PKU).
* Side effects can include abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, diarrhea, and nausea/vomiting.
* May decrease the body's ability to absorb Carbamazepine (Tegretol).
