COMMON USES: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
HOW IT'S SUPPLIED: 2.5-, 5- and 10- milligram tablets. 5-, 10-, and 20-milligram exteneded release (XR) capsules.
HOW IT WORKS: A central nervous system (CNS) stimulant whose actual method of action is not known.
THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR: * Contains only the more active (isomer) part of methylphenidate(ritalin). The other isomer/part, which has no effect on the body, is left out. * The usual dose of Focalin is half that of Ritalin. * Can cause stomach pain, fever, decreased appetite, nausea, trouble falling asleep and abnormal heartbeats. * May increase blood pressure, and/or worsen seizures. * This medicine should not be taken by anyone with glaucoma, tics or Tourette's syndrome. * Don?t use in a child who has marked anxiety, tension and/or agitation, since the drug may make these symptoms worse. * Focalin XR can be opened and sprinkled on food. * Should be used as part of a treatment program that includes behavior modification, educational interventions and therapies for patients with learning disabilities. * Blood tests to check white blood cell, hemoglobin, and platelet counts should be done regularly while on this medication.
