Nystatin (Mycostatin?, Nilstat?, Nystex?, Nystop?)

COMMON USES:
Used to treat some fungus/yeast infections on the skin surfaces, mucus membranes or in the mouth (thrush).

HOW IT?S SUPPLIED
Liquid Suspension - 100,000 units of Nystatin per milliliter
Tablet comes in 100,000 unit and 500,000 unit doses
Skin Cream - 100,000 units per gram
Skin Ointment - 100,000 units per gram
Skin Powder - 100,000 units per gram

HOW IT WORKS
The drug works by binding to and then breaking down the wall of fungal cells, killing the fungus that causes the infection.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR
* Liquid suspension can temporarily affect the sense of taste and decrease appetite.
* When taken by mouth, nystatin can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or stomach pain. This can be lessened if taken on an empty stomach.
* When using the liquid suspension, shake the bottle well before pouring your dose.
* Liquid suspension should be swished around the mouth for several minutes and then swallowed.
* Treatment with nystatin should be continued for 48 hours after symptoms and/or rash have disappeared to prevent re-infection.
* Do not bandage, wrap, or apply any occlusive dressing over this medicine.
