Sucralfate (Carafate?)

COMMON USES:
Usually used to treat stomach ulcers.
Also used to treat mouth sores that occur with cancer chemotherapy

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
1-gram tablets
1-gram per 10 milliliter suspension

HOW IT WORKS:
Sticks to the surface of the ulcer, coating it and protecting it from further damage from stomach acids and enzymes.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Usually is taken four times a day in order to form a continuous protective layer in the lining of the stomach.
* Should be taken on an empty stomach, 2 hours after or 1 hour before meals.
* May cause constipation, abdominal pain, and/or gas.
* Should not be given at the same time as cimetidine (Tagamet ?),Tetracycline, Phenytoin (Dilantin?) or Digoxin as it may decrease their effectiveness.
* Suspension should be shaken well before each use.
