Fluoxetine (Prozac?)

COMMON USES:
Used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety attacks and eating disorders like bulimia.

HOW IT?S SUPPLIED:
10- and 20- and 40- milligram capsules
10-milligram tablets
20 milligrams per 5 milliliter liquid
90 milligram delayed release capsules

HOW IT WORKS:
A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), this medicine is thought to work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:

* Studies have shown that children and teenagers who take antidepressants such as fluoxetine are more likely to think about harming or killing themselves or to plan or try to do so than children who do not take antidepressants.
? Use with caution in children who have liver or kidney disease.
? Can cause headache, flu-like symptoms, skin rash, hives, decreased appetite, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, nervousness, and/or trouble sleeping.
? May cause low sodium and/or platelet levels in the blood.
? Can increase blood levels of medicines like Dilantin? and Tegretol?.
? Liquid is mint-flavored.
? Do not use if your child is taking a medicine called an MAO inhibitor.
* Height and weight should be followed periodically while a child is receiving this medicine.
