A young girl was brought to a doctor?s office complaining of multiple complications from an accident two years before. She had been on a bicycle and had been blindsided by a car. She hit her head on the pavement and briefly lost consciousness. Ever since that time, she had trouble with headaches that would come and go, changes in her personality (?sometimes she just gets real ornery all of a sudden?, Her mother explained), excess nervousness, difficulty falling asleep at night, and ?just feeling down? sometimes. She had been seen by a neurologist who had diagnosed her with post-traumatic migraine headaches and affective mood disorder. To treat this, the doctor prescribed several medications to help the headaches. While some of the medicines (Paxil?) calmed her down, they didn?t take away the headaches, and she had gained almost 20 pounds over the past 6 months, making her obese. On further discussion, the doctor discovered that the girl routinely drank 6-7 cans of soda each day and, when not drinking soda, preferred lemonade to water or milk. The doctor encouraged the mother to gradually cut back on the number of sodas she allowed her daughter to drink at home and, over the next two months, the girl?s headaches, and feelings of nervousness got better.
