PTA Hosts Successful Videoconference Discussion
Date: 05/02/2007

Author: jsimpvos@med.unc.edu

On Friday, April 20th, in response to a question posed on TelAbility?s Listserv, the WATCH Project hosted a very successful and informative multipoint videoconference case study discussion on Osteogenesis Impefecta (OI).

The discussion, held simultaneously at 4 sites and involved 25 participants, included a medical perspective/background on OI (provided by Dr. Alexander), research on current drug and intervention treatments for OI, (provided by Jennifer Mock, PT at Pediatric Therapy Associates and Michael Tamaddoni, PT interen at Duke University), and the family's experience. Both the mother and 4 year old daughter were present during the discussion which offered a lively, honest, and positive perspective.

Other participants included TelAbility staff, therapists at Pediatric Therapy Associates in Raleigh and early intervention staff at the Raleigh CDSA. In addition, we were very excited to host therapists and staff from the Wilmington area that also participated via videoconference at the Wilmington CDSA. This was an excellent collaborative learning experience for all involved.

100% of the participants stated they were comfortable attending the video conference discussion. All the participants were satisfied to very satisfied with both the organization of the session and the information provided during the session. Enhanced collaboration across many disciplines, along with reduced travel time and involvment of the family were cited as the greatest advantages of the session.

We thank Jennifer Mock of PTA and the family for their willingness to initiate and particpate in this session.
