She has worked exclusively with children with feeding and swallowing disorders at Carolina Pediatric Dysphagia for almost 3 years. She is a member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association special interest divisions (13) Swallowing/swallowing disorders and (14) Communication disorders and sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations. These special interest divisions provide networking and information regarding the latest in research and clinical issues.

Joan has over 21 years of experience working with infants and children with feeding/swallowing disorders/ dysphagia. She worked 10 years in the hospital setting (WakeMed and Vanderbilt Medical Center) providing feeding evaluations and treatment in the NICU, PICU, special care follow up clinics and on the pediatric floor. After starting or re-organizing feeding Clinics in the hospital, she started Carolina Pediatric Dysphagia in 1996. She continues to provide consultation to professionals world wide through her website www.feeding.com, as well as through conferences and group consultation and a publication in a professional journal.
Joan continues to evaluate in the clinic and through Modified Barium Swallow Studies (in the x-ray department of a hospital) and treat infants and children. She received her Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech Language & Hearing Association in 2001. Traci has treated many types of speech and language disorders in areas such as receptive and expressive language, articulation, voice, and fluency. She also has experience with children diagnosed with behavioral/emotional disorders, cognitive impairments, autism, apraxia of speech, and Down syndrome. Her previous employment with the public school system provided her with a wide variety of work experience with children from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, as well as parent counseling/education and training. Traci is a North Carolina native and has lived in the Raleigh area since 2000.
