Restoring Your Passion Through Self-Care, Client Engagement and Developing Your Support Networks, Part I

June 8th, 2012, 1:00-2:30pm

Presented by Barton and Megan Cutter

Each of us entered our field with passion and a deep commitment to enhancing the lives of children, youth and adults with disabilities. While we have an ongoing belief and dedication to our roles as therapists, educators, medical staff and family members that keep us striving to improve the lives of those with whom we work, often times our own care is overlooked. We find ourselves merging our client's needs with our own, struggling to distinguish where our responsibilities end and theirs begins, and burnt out from the continuous drive to contribute.

Part I will focus on the exploration of the client/professional (or family member) relationship, identify what our needs are vs. our client's or family member's, and discover perspectives that will empower both you and your client to maintain autonomy.

Participants will:

  • Be able to identify healthy client relationships by understanding client and self as fully creative, resourceful, and whole.
  • Understand their own needs vs. their clients and explore transference within the disability community.
  • Be able to create and maintain healthy boundaries and distinguishing between compassion and empathy vs. investment in the outcome.

Restoring Your Passion Through Self-Care, Client Engagement and Developing Your Support Networks, Part II

June 22nd, 2012, 1:00-2:30pm

Presented by Barton and Megan Cutter

Part Two will focus on techniques to prevent burn out and stress, creating healthy boundaries to empower clients and staff alike, and identify the networks and relationships that support and replenish.

Participants will:

  • Distinguish between the client's support network and their own as well as identify personal support networks, as a caregiver, service provider or family member.
  • Discover tools to integrate healthy boundaries to empower clients, increase your own energy level while working with clients and avoid burn out.
  • Learn self care techniques such as journaling, personal reflection and mindfulness, as well as the use of physical activities and personal hobbies.
Co-leaders Barton and Megan Cutter bring a unique perspective as an inter-ability married couple.  Barton has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. They work to empower youth, professionals and family members. As a coach and mentor, Barton Cutter works hand-in-hand with professionals in the disability arena to help them discover balance, avoid burnout and fatigue, and reinvigorate their passion through continually reconnecting with a deep sense of purpose. Barton's wife, Megan is a creative writing and expressions facilitator, supporting youth to tell their story, facilitate communications within a family unit and establish community support networks.

An invitation to register for these workshops will be sent out via the listserv when registration opens for Part II.

1.5 Infant Toddler credits will be awarded for each session.
