APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (ABA) THERAPY February 10th, 2012, 1:00-2:30pm Presented by Ms. Callie Plattner, MS BCBA LPA from Creative Consultants
This workshop is intended to provide a general understanding of the principles and applications of ABA for Autism and related disabilities. This workshop will also focus on how to effectively decrease maladaptive behaviors and teach appropriate replacement skills.
Applied Behavior Analysis is the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree, and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for the improvement in behavior (Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1968; Sulzer-Azaroff & Mayer, 1991). 1.5 Infant Toddler credits will be awarded for this session.
WORKING WITH PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED CHILDREN: An Introduction to the MOVE model
February 24th, 2012, 1:00-2:30pm
Presented by Mr. David Schreuder, Executive Director of MOVE International
Mr. Schreuder will present information on the MOVE-Mobility Opportunities Via Education program and how to promote enhanced educational experiences for children with physical challenges. http://www.move-international.org/ MOVE (Mobility Opportunities Via Education)® is an activity-based curriculum designed to teach individuals basic, functional motor skills needed for adult life. These skills allow them to enjoy a more inclusive life-style. MOVE (Mobility Opportunities Via Education/Experience) helps children with severe disabilities acquire more abilities (and independence) to sit, stand, walk and transition. This is achieved through instruction and adaptive equipment. With these increased abilities there is 1) better health, 2) less burden for care providers to move or lift people, 3) more dignity, and 4) new opportunities for fuller participation and inclusion in family life, school and community. It combines natural body movement with an instructional process designed to help children and adults acquire increasing amounts of independence in sitting, standing and walking. The MOVE Curriculum recognizes that carers (a British term for parents and care givers) and individuals themselves have immense knowledge of what their needs are and fully involves them in developing a program to meet those needs. The framework also helps coordinate services provided by therapists, educators, agencies and others-a real team approach.
1.5 Infant Toddler credits will be awarded for this session.

NEUROTYPICAL A FILM ABOUT AUTISM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AUTISTICS
Will be screened on Saturday February 11th & Saturday February 25th at 10:00 am at the Carolina Theatre-309 W. Morgan St. Durham 27701.
What is the standard that identifies one person as whole and capable and another as disabled and broken?
Neurotypical, a film about autism from the perspective of autistics, parallels the lives of three individuals on the autism spectrum, each facing pivotal stages of growth. Violet, 3 years old, is absorbing the sensory world and learning ways to navigate through it; Nicholas, a teenager, is coming to terms with his diagnosis and his identity; and Paula, newly diagnosed, balances her autism advocacy work with the demands of homeschooling her son and sorting out a disintegrating marriage. By exploring the behavioral and perceptual differences that autistics express, differences that tend to separate them from a society that both sets the standard and attempts to have them meet it, the definition of 'normal' comes into question. Neurotypical ultimately broadens the concept of what it means to be human.
