Ondansetron (Zofran?)
Date: 07/15/2005

Author: JJA

COMMON USES:
Used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, anesthesia, and surgery.

HOW IT?S SUPPLIED:
4-, 8- and 24- milligram tablets
4- and 8-milligram orally disintegrating tablets (melt on your tongue).
4 milligram per 5 milliliter solution.

HOW IT WORKS:
When the body receives chemotherapy to treat cancer, the small intestine releases serotonin, a chemical that triggers the vomiting reflex. This medicine blocks the effects of serotonin, reducing feelings of nausea.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* The tablets may be taken with or without food.
* The oral disintegrating tablets contain aspartame, which can be dangerous to people with a condition called phenylketonuria.
* Side effects include diarrhea, headache, constipation, fever, rash, lightheadedness, dry mouth, and/or drowsiness.
* Children with liver disease may have an increased chance of side effects.
