Levothyroxine Sodium (Synthroid ?)

COMMON USES:
Used to treat children and adults with hypothyroidism who cannot make enough thyroid hormone on their own.

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
25-, 50-, 75-, 88, 100, 112-, 125- , 137-, 150-, 175- 200- and 300- microgram tablets.

HOW IT WORKS:
Identical to a hormone usually made by the thyroid gland, this medicine helps to regulate many important processes in the body that can affect growth and development.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Use with caution in children with heart disease, diabetes or blood clotting diseases.
* Frequent follow up with your physician is important to make sure that your child isn?t receiving too little or too much medicine.
* Overdoses can cause increased appetite, weight loss, anxiety, irritability, trouble sleeping, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, hair loss, stomach pain, diarrhea, and other side effects.
* Over treatment with this medicine in childhood may lead to shorter stature as an adult.
* Higher doses may be needed in children who are also taking Phenobarbital? or Tegretol?.
* Should be taken on an empty stomach
* Soybean flour found in some infant formulas, cotton seed meal, walnuts, and dietary fiber may reduce blood levels of this medicine.
* Replacement therapy with this medication is usually required throughout life.
