Mebendazole (Vermox?)

COMMON USES:
Used to treat intestinal infections by hookworms, pinworms, roundworms and/or whipworms.

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
100-milligram chewable tablet.

HOW IT WORKS:
The medicine kills the infecting worms by decreasing their formation and depleting their sugar supply.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Children with liver disease need to take a smaller dose.
* Can be swallowed whole, chewed or crushed.
* May be mixed with food.
* Can cause stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, headache, and/or a rash.
* Can rarely cause hepatitis, seizures.
* It is not known whether or not this medication is safe or effective for children under 2 years of age.
* Taking Cimetidine (Tagamet ?) at the same time may decrease Mebendazole?s effect.
* If the child is not cured 3 weeks after treatment, a second treatment course is usually given.
* Parents and children should be reminded that cleanliness is important to prevent reinfection. Hands should be washed, fingers kept out of the mouth and clothing and bedding should be washed nightly until infection is over.
