Mineral Oil (Fleet Mineral Oil?, Agoral?, Milkinol?)
Date: 10/01/2010

Author: JJA

COMMON USES:
Cathartic and Laxative (Decreases constipation and promotes passing of stools).

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
Liquid for oral use
Liquid for rectal use (130 milliliters)

HOW IT WORKS:
Eases the passage of stool by keeping more water in the stool and making the inside of the intestines more slippery.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Begins to work 6-8 hours after administration.
* Easier to take by mouth if chilled in the refrigerator first.
* Never give it by mouth to anyone with swallowing difficulties, or gastroesophageal reflux (GER) or to anyone at bedtime because the mineral oil, if it "comes back up" and goes into the lungs, can cause a life-threatening pneumonia.
* Not recommended for children less than 5 years old.
* Side effects can include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and itching around the rectum.
* Not to be used in children with ulcerative colitis or who have a colostomy or ileostomy.
* May reduce the body's ability to absorb vitamins A,D,E, and K.
