Omeprazole (Prilosec ?)

COMMON USES:
Used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and esophagitis (inflammation of the lining of the esophagus)

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
10-, 20-, and 40- milligram capsules
2 milligram per 1 milliliter suspension (can be made by pharmacists)

HOW IT WORKS:
A proton pump inhibitor, this medicine decreases the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Capsules should be swallowed whole.
* Chewing on the granules found in the capsule makes for a bitter taste and may reduce the effectiveness of the medicine.
* Use with caution in children with liver disease.
* May cause headache, diarrhea, stomach pain, gas, nausea, vomiting, constipation, skin rash, and/or dizziness.
* Best if taken on an empty stomach/before meals.
* Contains lactose as a preservative so may cause a reaction in children who are lactose intolerant.
