Paroxetine (Paxil?)

COMMON USES:
Used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and anxiety disorders in children.

HOW IT?S SUPPLIED:
10-, 20-, 30-, and 40- milligram tablets
10 milligrams per 5 milliliters liquid

HOW IT WORKS
A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), this medicine is thought to work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Effectiveness in children is still under investigation.
* Use with caution in children who have liver or kidney disease.
* Can cause anxiety, nausea, tiredness, and/or decreased appetite.
* Can decrease sodium and platelet levels in the blood.
* May cause sweating, dizziness, confusion, and tremor if treatment is stopped suddenly.
* Use with caution in a child who has had seizures.
* Do not use if your child is taking a medicine called an MAO inhibitor.
* May increase the risk of suicidal thinking and suicide attempts in children and adolescents under the age of 18 who use this medicine to treat depression.
* Has NOT been shown to be effective for the treatment of depression in the under-18 years age group.
