Tacrolimus (Protopic ?)

COMMON USES:
Used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (allergic skin rash).
In other forms, the medicine is used in kidney and liver transplants to help the patient?s body accept the new organ.

HOW IT?S SUPPLIED:
0.03% Ointment
0.1% Ointment ( only used for adults)
30-, 60-, and 100-gram tubes

HOW IT WORKS:
This medicine works to stop the activation of T-cells in the skin. This reduces inflammation and stops the skin rash from happening.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* To be used in children ages 2 and older.
* Should be used for short periods of time only.
* Should be used when other methods (shorter baths, hydrating creams) and therapies (steroid creams) haven?t worked well enough.
* May cause red skin, skin burning, and/or itchiness.
* Sometimes causes flu-like symptoms, allergic reaction, or headache.
* May increase risk of cancer with prolonged use.
* Make sure skin is dry before applying the medicine, then rub it in gently and fully.
* This medicine should be used until 1 week AFTER skin has cleared up.
* Use of this medicine may be associated with an increased risk of chicken pox and other skin infections and rashes.
* Try to avoid direct exposure to natural or artificial sunlight (tanning beds) while using this medicine.
