Bismuth Subsalicylate

BRAND NAMES:
Kaopectate?, Pepto-Bismol?

COMMON USES:
May be useful in the treatment of diarrhea.

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
Pepto-Bismol ? Caplets and Tablets (262 milligrams) and
Kaopectate ? Liquid (87 milligrams per 5 milliliters)


HOW IT WORKS:
While scientists aren?t sure exactly how it works, it is believed that bismuth subsalicylate helps increase the intestine's ability to absorb fluids back into the body.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Tablets should be crushed, chewed, or allowed to dissolve in the mouth..
* Liquid should be shaken well before each use.
* Children?s Liquid Kaopectate is Cherry flavored.
* Do not use if allergic to aspirin or salicylates.
* Do not use this medicine to treat nausea or vomiting in children or teenagers who have or are recovering from the flu or chickenpox as this may cause a serious condition called Reye?s Syndrome.
* May cause dark tongue and/or grayish black stools while taking this medicine.
* Overdose can cause constipation, seizures, confusion, rapid or deep breathing, hearing loss or ringing or buzzing in the ears, severe excitability or nervousness, severe drowsiness, and/or loss of consciousness.
