Palivizumab (Synagis?)

COMMON USES:
Used to prevent lung disease caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

HOW IT'S SUPPLIED:
50 or 100 milligrams of powder in vials (sterile water is added and the liquid is then injected into the muscle).

100 milligram per milliliter liquid solution, available in 50 and 100-milligram doses.

HOW IT WORKS:
Stops the Respiratory Syncytial Virus from growing and spreading through the lungs.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:
* Usually given to children younger than 2 years old who have chronic lung disease and/or a history of being born premature.
* May sometimes be given to children who have congenital heart disease.
* The first shot should be given before the RSV season (starting in October) begins.
* One shot is given each month until the RSV season is over.
* Possible side effects include allergic reactions, inner ear infection, runny nose, fever, and/or rash.
* Palivizumab does not interact with other medications and does not interfere with a child's response to vaccinations.
