Ranitidine (Zantac?)

COMMON USES:
Relieves the heartburn of acid reflux.
Helps stomach ulcers heal.

HOW ITS SUPPLIED:
75 milligram, 150 milligram and 300 milligram tablets (usually used in adults)
Syrup (15 milligrams in each milliliter)
Effervescent tablets (25- and 150- milligrams)

HOW IT WORKS:
Zantac decreases the acid made by the stomach that may cause pain when there is an ulcer or when it comes back up the esophagus (food pipe) in reflux.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR
* The peppermint-flavored Zantac syrup also contains 7.5% alcohol, sorbitol and phenylalanine.
* Effervescent tablets contain phenylalanine.
* Effervescent tablets should be dissolved in water before taking.
* Common side effects include constipation, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and stomach pain.
* Can also cause headache, tiredness, difficulty falling asleep, joint aches, liver disease,
* A special carbohydrate-free liquid can be made for children on the ketogenic diet.
* The dose may need to be decreased in kidney or liver disease.
* Zantac 75 is now available without a prescription.
